What is Composer?
Marketers are under pressure to do more with less: spend less time on manual execution, achieve stronger results from existing programs, and unlock new growth opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have the capacity or expertise to pursue.
Composer is built for exactly that. As a practical assistive tool embedded in Klaviyo, Composer acts as your marketing agent. It helps you:
- Increase efficiency: Automate repetitive tasks and accelerate execution so you can focus on strategy.
- Improve effectiveness: Make smarter, data-informed decisions that drive better results over time.
- Expand what’s possible: Pursue new opportunities in your marketing program that would otherwise require more time or expertise.
What sets Composer apart from general AI tools is simple: it understands your marketing strategy (i.e., your customer data, flows, campaigns, segments, etc.) and uses that knowledge to pursue new growth opportunities. Learn more about how to transform your strategy with Composer in the video below.
Explore use cases for Composer
Composer can help across the full breadth of your Klaviyo marketing program. Here are 3 high-impact areas to explore:
Draft campaign content
Go from brief to ready-to-send in minutes. Composer can draft email and text message campaigns tailored to your brand voice and audience.
Moreover, we recommend using Composer for quality assurance (QA) during scheduled campaigns to check for grammar, ensure content is on-brand, spot any errors, etc., before sending.
Example prompts:
- “Review all the campaigns I have scheduled for this quarter, check them for quality: what’s missing and how can we improve?”
- “Write a flash sale text message campaign for 20% off this weekend only.”
- “Draft a re-engagement email for subscribers who haven’t opened in 90 days.”
Improve flows
Ask Composer to surface your lowest-performing flows, diagnose why they’re underperforming, and recommend improvements. Otherwise, you can identify gaps where new flows can drive incremental revenue.
Example prompts:
- “Which of my flows are lowest performing, and why?”
- “What gaps exist in my flow strategy that I should fill?”
- “How can I improve my welcome series open rate?”
Build or audit segments
Go beyond basic segment criteria and reduce the time you spend building complex segments. Now, Composer can help you build richer, more precise segments by pulling in insights across Klaviyo and your integrations.
Example prompts:
- “Audit my segments from the last 30 days.”
- “Expand my VIP segment with deeper insights across my integrations.”
- “Create a segment of customers who purchased in the last 30 days but haven’t opened an email.”
- “Build a high-intent segment based on browse behavior and purchase history.”
First, consider what you want to ask of Composer. If it’s an open-ended discovery question, proceed to step 2. If, instead, you want Composer to help with a specific Klaviyo topic (audit a flow, build a campaign, etc.), navigate to that designated tab in Klaviyo at this time.
Click to open Composer via the designated icon in the top-right corner of your screen. This will open the Composer panel, where you can chat with the agent.
Choose from a prompt template (e.g., if you are in the Flows section of Klaviyo, then the sample prompts will be flow-specific). Otherwise, type a clear, specific question or request from scratch. The more context you give, the better your response will be. For example: "Which of my flows are underperforming, and what should I do to improve them?"
Composer will generate a response based on your Klaviyo data and business context. Read through the output carefully; it may include analysis, recommendations, or drafted content ready for your review.
Not quite right? Keep prompting. Ask Composer to adjust the tone, focus on a different segment, or go deeper on a specific insight. Think of this process as a conversation, not a one-shot request.
Once you're happy with the output, apply the changes that Composer recommends, or proceed with any next steps to continue drafting, reviewing, or scheduling the content. Always review AI-generated content against your brand voice and business goals before publishing.
Follow Composer best practices
Draft specific prompts
Vague prompts produce vague results. The more specific you are about what you want, the more useful Composer's output will be. Include details like the audience, goal, timeframe, or channel.
Instead of: "Write me an email." Try: "Write a re-engagement email for subscribers who haven't opened in 90 days, with a friendly tone."
Ask multiple questions to prompt exploration
Don't stop at 1 prompt. Refine your output until you get exactly what you need. This is especially important when asking Composer to conduct audits or analyze your marketing results.
Encourage exploration with the tool by asking specific follow-up questions that prompt the AI to delve deeper into the data until you get what you’re looking for.
Review and refine before setting content live
Composer's first response is a starting point, not a final product. Treat it like a first draft from a talented colleague: review it, shape it to match your brand voice and business goals, and add your personal touch. The best results come from combining AI speed with human judgment.
Before publishing AI-generated content, take a moment to review it. You should always:
- Check that the messaging is accurate, on-brand, and appropriate for your audience.
- Verify any data points or claims made in the copy.
- Confirm that links, offers, and calls to action are correct.
Once you're confident, set it live through standard Klaviyo publishing steps.
Remember your responsibilities as an AI user
AI tools like Composer are powerful, but they come with responsibilities. Be aware of AI’s limitations: Composer may occasionally produce inaccurate, incomplete, or off-brand outputs.
It is your responsibility as an AI user to apply your own judgment before publishing. Follow your organization's guidelines for responsible AI use, and consider the impact of any AI-generated content before publishing. Learn more about using AI responsibly.
