Create custom questions
Custom questions let you collect richer data from customers within your Social Auto-replies. As the name suggests, you can customize a follow-up question to include in the automation’s workflow, asking about someone’s preferences, shopping habits, and interests to eliminate guesswork.
Watch the video below to see how to set up custom questions in Klaviyo, so you can start gathering meaningful subscriber data right away.
Identify custom question use cases
Now that you know how to build a custom question, let's take a step back and answer the question: What custom questions can you ask?
Below are 3 core use cases for when and how to ask a custom question.
Learn preferences
Ask subscribers about their favorite product categories, styles, or interests. When you know what people actually want, every message you send can feel relevant and personal.
Examples of preferences you may collect:
- Product preferences (e.g., product categories, styles, or sizing)
- Interests (e.g., hobbies, job, or characteristics about them)
- Shopping habits (e.g., frequency, timing, or budget)
These customer insights make it easier to reach customers at the right moment with the right offer.
Send recommendations
Responses to custom questions power highly personalized product recommendations, matching customers with items they're interested in. A more tailored shopping experience can drive conversions.
In this case, you can do the following steps:
- Ask what someone is interested in (e.g., what are you shopping for?)
- Send an automated link to your catalog or best sellers page.
- Save their answer (this happens automatically on the backend!) for later use.
- Follow up if they don’t shop (e.g., within the next 3 days), sending a flow via email or text with a recommendation based on their unique answer.
Run games or contests
Make data collection fun! Ask subscribers to vote on a product name, or run another contest using custom questions, turning a simple question into a more memorable interaction.
In this example, you prompt the customer with the following steps:
- Encourage them to DM your brand with the keyword “CONTEST”.
- Collect their contact information with the standard social reply start.
- Ask them to DM a name for your newest product (a new sneaker!).
- Review all options submitted within your set timeframe (e.g., by the end of the week).
- Select from the submitted options (saved as profile properties) and follow up with the lucky winner via email to deliver an exclusive prize.
